NYStixs Wood Bats started as a "what if?" challenge in 2001. After college, I joined up with a team playing in a few wood bat baseball leagues. I started off by ordering bats for teammates, followed up by buying bats in bulk and selling them on the street. I researched the mechanics of woodturning and bat producitons and took my first steps.

The research phase was quite lengthy, not due to the materials needed, but the technicalities. Billet specifications and quality, lathe type, lathe bed length, measurement tools and knives. After purchasing all the equipment I needed, wood and help from bat companies gracious enough to answer questions, I got started.

Making something that resembles a baseball bat!

After setting up lathe, with assistance from my father and customer support, I put in a billet and for the next 4 hours, carved my first stix. After completing the first bat, my confidence grew. This lead to many more good ones and bad ones. Wood bats that were too heavy to handles being to thin.

By the time our team started our spring training, I had some bats ready for field testing in the batting cages. The hitters on my team put the 1st generation bats through a thorough test. My number 1 goal was not to fight criticism, but to accept, meditate and make better wood bats. When the season rolled around, I had bats in the trunk and I was hitting the ballparks telling people who I am and what I can offer. For the next 4 years, I made a lot of bats for direct customers on my first lathe and my turning time dropped to 20 to 25 minutes. But I needed to get faster and the only answer was CNC.

Changes were being made with suppliers, which forced me into upgrade to an industrial lathe. Financial aid from my father, I was able to purchase a CNC lathe. A CNC lathe gives me the flexibility in design and consistency.

Future of NYStixs Wood Bats

NYStixs is in it for the long haul. Our operating expenses are low, because we work out of our home and inturn, bat prices are reasonable. NYStixs' uses only premium quality ash, maple and birch billets. At this time, we are not MLB licensed company, due to cost. There are many companies which produce excellent product, however the bats made here at NYStixs are equivalent to our competitors.
