The New York Yankees will win the World Series. That's right, I have chosen. The reason is not because they are 1 game away. The reason is because this series is no longer quality baseball. This is a regular season game, with the Yankees beating up on a team lesser than their talent and intellect.
I am going to jump to the 9th inning. Who is calling the shots in the Philly dugout? Time and time again, teams try to reinvent the game of baseball when playing the Yankees. Last night was another horrible and mind boggling attempt. Johnny Damon hits ball to left for a base hit after battling Lidge. Mark Texiera is the next batter and the Phillies put the "shift on". The shift is they position the shortstop on second base side and the second baseman plays short right field.
The Phillies forgot two or three things.
1. Texiera, in my opinion is not a dead pull hitter from left side. If you want to pitch him in fine, pull second baseman closer to first, and keep the shortstop up middle in DP position, because
2. Johnny Damon has legs, if he goes middle infielder needs to be in position to receive throw from the catcher and obstruct after slide, but
3.The Phillies put Felix in a tough spot to have to field throw from catcher with a fast runner on 1st.
4. Where the catcher Ruiz, decided to make the short throw from his knees, which allowed Damon to get room to start sprint to 3rd, where
5. Lidge was sleeping on the mound and not covering the empty base. Are you kidding me?
Well it was 5 things..
But what really had me crazy was Lidges decision to listen to Tim MacCarver the announcer and NOT throw his best pitch to AROD, because the slider has sharp break and can bounce before being received by catcher. And Lidge did just that, threw the fastball (not his best pitch) that AROD deposited into the left field corner. The next thing that happen, Mariano Rivera started to get warmed up. Game Over.
